Herzog & de Meuron Architectural Design Project on VitraHaus

Herzog & de Meuron is the Basel-based architects who has designed their latest modern architectural building project that is called as "VitraHaus building", a series of stacked pitched-roof boxed for Vitra’s Home Collection with a striking appearance located on the northern side of the grounds in front of the fenced perimeter of the production premises.

The VitraHaus joins two other buildings in this area, the Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry (1989) and the Conference Pavilion by Tadao Ando (1993). The ample size of the plot made it possible to position the new structure a good distance away from the Vitra Design Museum and adjacent gatehouse, making room for an extension of the orchard meadow in front of the buildings, a typical feature of the local landscape.

The concept of the VitraHaus connects two themes that appear repeatedly in the oeuvre of Herzog & de Meuron: the theme of the archetypal house and the theme of stacked volumes. In Weil am Rhein, it was especially appropriate to return to the idea of the ur-house, since the primary purpose of the five-storey building is to present furnishings and objects for the home. Due to the proportions and dimensions of the interior spaces – the architects use the term ‘domestic scale’ – the showrooms are reminiscent of familiar residential settings.

The individual ‘houses’, which have the general characteristics of a display space, are conceived as abstract elements. With just a few exceptions, only the gable ends are glazed, and the structural volumes seem to have been shaped with an extrusion press. Stacked into a total of five stories and breathtakingly cantilevered up to 49 feet in some places, the twelve houses, whose floor slabs intersect the underlying gables, create a three-dimensional assemblage – a pile of houses that, at first glance, has an almost chaotic appearance.

Zara Store Facade at Westfield London

This architectural design projects is located in west London’s Westfield shopping centre. Its a facade of the fashion chain Zara's flagship store which is made out from panels of HI-MACS material.

Designer Zara Estudio and fabricators Gruppo Candido Hermida chose HI-MACS in a Toffee Brown hue, and combined it with a metal trim between the pieces. Using 81 panels of HI-MACS and 3 sheets of steel, the angles and 3-D shapes allowed them to create an intriguing effect.

The building was designed for the Otto Bock HealthCare company, a world leader in prosthetics and orthotics. The organic-dynamic design of the six-storey building is based on the principles of nature – as a model of harmony between technology and people.

The facade bands have modeled the structure of muscle fibers that encircle the building structure in soft form. The “soft” appearance, combined with a unique facade media production, is an open, friendly and accessible institution, and thus contributes to the image building of the company.

Renovation of Ex Sellerie Turin Italy by Giorgio Comoglio

This new completed renovation projectof the Ex Sellerie is designed by Italian architect Giorgio Comoglio. The project is located in the area of the ex military arsenal in Turin, Italy. The task of the project is to increase the original building’s floor area and height. The minimal form of perforated steel envelope has been introduced to integrate the existing building into one, and also not to interfere with the surrounding buildings.

"We opted to install a curtain of perforated sheet metal in copper-zinc-titanium alloy attached independently on the facade. This skin was meant to wrap the building like an ambiguous veil that conceals the complexity and architectural disorder determined by the previous structure, transforming the pitched roof into a series of homogeneous volumes superimposed. The building is wrapped in a new shell that filters the view of the city with different transparencies."

Monument to Pedro Almodóvar by Enproyecto Architects

This Pedro Almodóvar Monument is a new completed architectural design in recognition of Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar located in his hometown of Calzada de Calatrava, in the heart of the community of Castilla, La Mancha, Spain.

The project was the winner of a competition launched by the community government to pay tribute to Almodóvar’s film work and to make references to the culture and landscape of La Mancha. The main idea of the project was to frame the land of La Mancha, as if it were a fragment of one of his films.
